This Black Sesame Vanilla Swirl Cake blends a bold nutty flavor with a soft vanilla crumb, creating a striking swirl pattern and a comforting, beautifully balanced dessert.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup black sesame paste
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup whole milk
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon toasted black sesame seeds (optional)
  • Fresh berries (optional)
  • Powdered sugar (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and prepare an 8- or 9-inch cake pan with parchment and grease.
  2. Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy, then add eggs one at a time and mix in vanilla.
  3. Whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt, then alternate adding dry ingredients and milk to form a smooth vanilla batter.
  4. Mix black sesame paste, sugar, flour, and milk in a separate bowl to form a thick sesame batter.
  5. Spoon alternating portions of vanilla and sesame batter into the pan.
  6. Swirl gently with a knife in a figure-eight motion without overmixing.
  7. Bake for 40–50 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
  8. Let the cake cool in the pan for 20 minutes before slicing.

Notes

  1. Reduce sesame paste slightly for a milder flavor if preferred.
  2. Use gluten-free flour blend with xanthan gum if making a gluten-free version.
  3. Store at room temperature for three days or refrigerate for up to a week.
