Description
A comforting and flavorful Salisbury Steak recipe featuring juicy ground beef patties simmered in rich mushroom gravy. This classic American dinner is easy to make, deeply satisfying, and perfect for weeknights or family gatherings.
Ingredients
For the patties:
1 lb ground beef (80% lean)
½ cup breadcrumbs
1 large egg
1 small onion, finely chopped
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tsp Dijon mustard
½ tsp garlic powder
Salt and black pepper, to taste
For the gravy:
2 tbsp unsalted butter
1 small onion, sliced
1 cup mushrooms, sliced
2 tbsp all-purpose flour
2 cups beef broth
1 tbsp ketchup
1 tsp soy sauce
½ tsp thyme (optional)
Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
Combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, onion, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until combined.
Shape the mixture into oval patties about ¾ inch thick.
Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat and sear patties for 3–4 minutes per side until golden brown. Remove and set aside.
In the same pan, melt butter and sauté onions until softened. Add mushrooms and cook until golden.
Sprinkle in flour and stir for one minute to make a roux. Gradually whisk in beef broth, ketchup, and soy sauce until smooth.
Return patties to the skillet, spoon gravy over them, and simmer for 10–12 minutes until the sauce thickens and the patties are fully cooked.
Serve hot with mashed potatoes, noodles, or rice, topped with fresh parsley if desired.
Notes
Avoid overmixing the meat mixture to keep the patties tender.
For a richer flavor, use a splash of red wine in the gravy.
The dish reheats well and can be frozen for up to two months.
