- 1 pound ground beef (80/20 recommended)
- 1 tablespoon butter or neutral oil
- 1 medium yellow onion, thinly sliced
- 1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 6 slices provolone cheese
- 4 hoagie rolls, split and lightly toasted
Instructions
- Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add the butter or oil.
- Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it up, until browned and mostly cooked through.
- Season the beef with salt, black pepper, and Worcestershire sauce.
- Push the beef to one side of the skillet and add the sliced onion and bell pepper.
- Cook the vegetables until softened and lightly caramelized, then stir in the garlic.
- Combine the beef and vegetables evenly in the skillet.
- Reduce heat to low, place provolone slices over the mixture, and cover until melted.
- Spoon the cheesy beef mixture into toasted hoagie rolls and serve warm.
Notes
- For extra flavor, add sliced mushrooms with the onions and peppers.
- American or mozzarella cheese can be substituted for provolone.
- Toast the hoagie rolls to prevent them from becoming soggy.
- The filling can be made ahead and reheated in a skillet.
