  • Author: mymamarecipes.com
  • Total Time: 50 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings 1x

Description

This indulgent dessert combines a moist chocolate cake with a gooey hot fudge sauce that forms naturally as it bakes. A nostalgic favorite that requires only pantry staples, it’s perfect for cozy nights, potlucks, or any time you’re craving rich, comforting chocolate. Serve warm with ice cream or whipped cream for the ultimate experience.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Cake Batter:

  • 1 cup (125g) all-purpose flour

  • 3/4 cup (150g) granulated sugar

  • 1/4 cup (30g) unsweetened cocoa powder

  • 2 teaspoons baking powder

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

  • 1/2 cup (120ml) milk

  • 1/4 cup (60g) unsalted butter, melted

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the Fudge Sauce Layer:

  • 1/2 cup (100g) brown sugar

  • 1/4 cup (30g) unsweetened cocoa powder

  • 1 3/4 cups (420ml) hot water

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch square or similar-sized baking dish.

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.

  • Stir in milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract until smooth. Spread the batter evenly into the prepared baking dish.

  • In a separate bowl, mix the brown sugar and cocoa powder. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the batter (do not stir).

  • Carefully pour the hot water over the top—again, do not stir.

  • Bake for 30 to 35 minutes until the cake has risen and the top looks set.

  • Let the cake cool for 15 minutes. Spoon into bowls, ensuring to scoop up the sauce at the bottom. Serve warm with ice cream or whipped cream.

Notes

Use high-quality cocoa powder for the richest flavor.

Dark cocoa powder adds deeper chocolate intensity.

Add-ins like chopped walnuts, pecans, or chocolate chips work well.

For dietary needs, substitute with gluten-free flour or dairy-free butter.
