Semi-Homemade Hot Chocolate Mix

  • Author: Ryan Mitchell
  • Total Time: 10 minutes
  • Yield: about 16 servings 1x

Description

This rich Semi-Homemade Hot Chocolate Mix combines unsweetened cocoa, powdered sugar, powdered milk, and real chocolate pieces to create a cozy, make-ahead drink mix you can scoop into a mug in seconds. It delivers deeper chocolate flavor than store-bought packets while staying quick enough for busy weeknights and holiday mornings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 cup powdered milk or powdered creamer
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped chocolate or mini chocolate chips
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla powder or powdered flavoring (optional)
  • Mini marshmallows for topping (optional)

Instructions

  1. Sift the cocoa powder, powdered sugar, powdered milk, cornstarch, and fine sea salt into a large mixing bowl to remove any lumps.
  2. Whisk the dry ingredients together until the color and texture look completely uniform.
  3. Stir in the finely chopped chocolate or mini chocolate chips, mixing until they are evenly distributed throughout the blend.
  4. If you want a very fine powder, pulse the mixture a few times in a food processor, stopping before the chocolate begins to soften or melt.
  5. Transfer the finished hot chocolate mix to an airtight jar or container and store it in a cool, dry place.
  6. To prepare a mug, add 2 to 3 tablespoons of mix to 8 ounces of hot milk or hot water, stir until smooth, then top with mini marshmallows if desired.

Notes

  1. For the creamiest texture and richest flavor, use hot whole milk or a half-and-half and milk blend instead of water.
  2. If the mix settles in the jar, give it a good shake before scooping so the chocolate pieces and cocoa stay evenly distributed.
  3. This mix keeps well for about 3 to 6 months when stored in an airtight container away from moisture and heat.
  4. To make a quick vegan version, swap powdered milk for dairy-free powdered creamer and serve the mix with almond, soy, or oat milk.
  5. For a gluten-free option, choose cocoa powder and chocolate chips that are certified gluten-free.
  6. Create flavor variations by stirring peppermint pieces, cinnamon, instant espresso, or a pinch of cayenne into a portion of the mix before serving.
