Description

Grilled cheese sloppy joes combine juicy seasoned beef, melty cheese, and crispy toasted bread into one comforting, family-friendly sandwich that’s easy to make and perfect for busy nights.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 cup yellow onion, diced
  • 34 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon burger seasoning
  • 8 oz tomato sauce
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 8 slices Texas toast
  • Mayonnaise or butter, for spreading
  • 8 slices cheese (American, cheddar, or preferred melting cheese)

Instructions

  1. Brown the ground beef with the onion and garlic in a skillet over medium heat until fully cooked, then drain excess grease.
  2. Stir in the tomato paste, burger seasoning, tomato sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, and brown sugar until well combined.
  3. Simmer the mixture for about 5 minutes until thick and saucy.
  4. Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat and spread mayonnaise or butter on one side of each bread slice.
  5. Place bread butter-side down in the pan, add a slice of cheese, then spoon the sloppy joe mixture on top.
  6. Top with another slice of bread, cheese-side down, and cook until golden and the cheese melts.
  7. Flip carefully and cook the second side until crispy and heated through.
  8. Remove from heat, let rest briefly, then serve warm.

Notes

  1. You can prepare the sloppy joe filling ahead of time and reheat before assembling.
  2. If you prefer less sweetness, reduce the brown sugar slightly.
  3. Use any good melting cheese you enjoy, such as cheddar or Colby Jack.
  4. For extra crispiness, cook sandwiches slowly over medium heat.
